Adapted Physical Activity Lesson

Today in my Adapted Physical Activity class, me and two other students in my class got to teach a group of 5 year-olds with autism. They are the cutest little things I have ever seen in my life. The little girl that I work with, her name is Carly and at the very beginning of working with her, it was a little tough. But now that I have gotten to know her a little better and understand what she likes and doesn't like, it makes helping her with activities easier. So as I was mentioning, today we got to teach them about using scooters to help with their lower body muscular endurance. It was such a fun lesson! We had a period where we let them just explore with the scooters. We let them try it on the stomachs or sitting but we were hesitant to let them try it on their knees. We explained how to hold onto the handles on the side so they wouldn't pinch their fingers and it was just so fun watching them scoot around the gymnasium. After the exploring and what not, we set up 5 different stations. We had a station where they had to trace shapes on the scooter, a station where they scooted down an alley and knocked over jumbo bowling pins with their body, a station to play scooter limbo, a station to zig zag through cones, and a station where they had to travel through a maze. It was pretty fun for them and for us as teachers. We had music playing and everything and at the very end to close our session, we played with the infamous parachute! We made a huge bubble in the middle and then we even used the parachute to make a giant tent with everyone underneath of it. It was a pretty cool day. :)
